ALGIS is an activity group of LARIA (Local Authority Research and Intelligence Association) and aims to raise awareness of the potential and actual benefits of the work of information specialists within local government and improve the effectiveness of information specialists within local government.

This may be in a traditional library role, in knowledge management, coping with the demands of Freedom of Information, in web development or as part of e-government.

Information and knowledge are valued today as never before. But there are challenges ahead as the information available continues its relentless growth and the technological ways of sharing it struggle to keep pace. E-government targets and Freedom of Information legislation will mean better control of information will be essential to all local authorities.
